They Stole My Crayon are an ethereal alternative music band from Southern California. Comprised of three multi-instrumentalists and vocalists, They Stole My Crayon employs a vast variety of influences and mixes them with beautiful dissonance, fascinating song structures, and an eccentric sense of musicality.

These are musicians who get out of the city. This album is far more pastoral than any LA band that comes to mind. And expansive beyond any trio save for the music of XTC. It’s good to remember that LA beaches are sometimes foggy as lush melodic vocal harmony-based tracks evoke prog/folk conversational markers advanced by experimental English bands Beatles, Pink Floyd, and West Coasters Alice In Chains, Elliott Smith, and Stone Temple Pilots.

Babirusa album art for MMGS
From time to time a band or solo artist will submit music to Audio Gumshoe that is difficult to describe. This particular submission comes from an experimental group based in Louisville, Kentucky. They offered very little background info about themselves, so the gumshoe had to go to work.

Babirusa has several albums and single songs released at their account on Bandcamp. These include the recent collection “Mitch McConnell’s Grapefruit Stand.” I’ve played three songs from that collection, as well as a new release from December. And, if you are so inclined, I highly recommend that you visit the Bandcamp page to hear their rendition of the Disney tune “Grim Grinning Ghosts.”

What can I say about the band? First, I like them. Second, for some reason this album reminded me a bit of The Small Faces release from 1969 called “Ogden’s Nut Gone Flake.” I don’t need to tell you, but I will: I listened to that release over and over again until I broke the… 8-track. Yes. I said it.

Finally, one of the most unique things about this band is that they have foregone the typical pop-rock instrumentation that includes a bass player. Instead, they have a cellist. I like cellists. I am one. (But I’m also a bass player.)

I leave it to you to follow the (very few) links in this page to find out more about this band.

Enjoy the show — and don’t forget to talk up Babirusa on your social profiles. They’ll love knowing that you’re talking about them.

Monks of Mellonwah

Monks of Mellonwah Ghost Stories EP album art

How this band showed up in the Audio Gumshoe file stack is a mystery to me. They are well known the world over. They have won awards (‘International Rock Artist Of The Year’ at the Los Angeles Music Awards, 2012 and ‘Best Indie RockBand’ at the Artists In Music Awards, 2012) and they have appeared on broadcasts, web sites and podcasts for quite some time.

Something must be hiding in this band’s existence that has caused to us to miss something significant. Is it that they recently worked with producer Keith Olson (Fleetwood Mac, Ozzy Osbourne, Foreigner, Heart, Joe Walsh)? No, that’s readily available information. Are we missing something about their diligence in working toward worldwide acceptance? No, they’ve recently signed with A&R Worldwide (Coldplay, Muse, Adele). That information is readily available, as well.

I leave it to you to follow the links in this page to find out more about this band. After listening, I believe that you’ll find that they create good, solid, well-produced music that will leave you to wanting to hear more. Be cautious, though. They may have a dark side. The song titles played in today’s episode hint to something a bit more sinister.

Enjoy the show — and don’t forget to talk up the Monks of Mellonwah on your social profiles. They’ll love knowing that you’re talking about them.
